Internships for Students
(Internships in information technology and science, the sciences, and international internships, among others--perhaps a chance to be one of the crew on a replica of a slave vessel)

Search for all kinds of internships at www.usaintern.com

Check out summer and year-round programs that pay education awards:
www.americorps.org
(NOTE: the educational awards are bigger for the year-round programs; you are only allowed two education awards; so if you take the small summer award, you can only get one more award!)

For students interested in computers, including those interested in information policy, recruiting people in the technology field, and high tech business issues,
good news--internships in these fields are well-paid:
-
Google's Be-Bold Internships
-
General
-
Good pay;
For students who've completed one or more years of college, but who have not graduated.
(You're best bet might be to take calculus or another math course and one computer course first, or else a course where you use computers a lot)

From the FAQ at GOOGLE:
-
-
Is there a required major?
-
All majors are encouraged to apply
-
Are international students eligible?
-
Students must be enrolled at a US University/College. Students must be able to provide proof of US work authorization extending beyond twelve months.
-
Does Google provide housing?
-
No. However, we do provide interns with resources to find housing in the area. For example, students are added to a mailing list to meet potential roommates and we will provide you with information on how to find an apartment. Many interns choose to live in San Francisco and ride the Google shuttle to Mountain View, CA.
-
Internships are available in the following areas:
-
* Policy & Government Affairs
(Google’s Policy team works to advance public policy positions and related activities reflecting the goals and values of the company. Key issues handled by this team include those relating to privacy, content regulation, freedom of speech, advertising, intellectual property, and general technology);
* People Operations
(Do you have the ability to inspire, compel and empower others? Google’s People Operations roles are focused on redefining human resources and preserving Google’s uncommon culture in the way we attract, hire, develop and reward talented people);
* More
-
Candidates must:
-
* Be currently enrolled in a 4-year BA/BS program, in any major, at a university in the United States.
* Be a current freshman, sophomore, or junior.
* Be a returning student; graduating seniors are not eligible. View a list of our full-time positions.
The program is open to all qualified college students, and is committed to addressing diversity in our company and in the technology industry. Students who are a member of a group that is historically under-represented in the technology industry are encouraged to apply, including Native American, African American and Hispanic students as well as students with disabilities.
-
When applying online, please be prepared to submit the following materials:
-
* An updated resume (preferably in .pdf format)
* A current unofficial or official school transcript (preferably in .pdf format)
* Three short essay questions. Please do not exceed 1000 words total for the three responses. You can determine how you would like to distribute the word count across your answers:
-
How has technology made a personal impact on your life?
-
Diversity and inclusion are fundamental to Google’s business. How would you support diversity and inclusion in the technology industry?
-
How will the BOLD program complement your personal and professional goals?
-
We will be accepting applications until
-
February 6, 2009. Candidates are encouraged to apply early. Interviews will begin in late January, and offer decisions will be extended in early March.

From the FAQ
-
-
What can I expect to do at Microsoft during my internship?
-
Microsoft interns share the same job responsibilities as full-time employees in the product groups. You'll be given real work with actual problems to solve. As an intern, you'll be charged with enabling our product teams to deliver world-class software on schedule.
-
If I'm not a computer science major, can I still intern?
-
We don't require that you be a computer science major in order to be an intern, and have a number of non-technical internships. We're interested in individuals who have demonstrated a deep passion for technology and have a desire to solve problems.
-
Will I work in a number of groups during my internship, or focus on a specific goal in one group?
-
You will commit to a specific group during your internship. It's the best way to make sure you have the opportunity to make a real contribution. However, there will be plenty of opportunities to attend discussions about different Microsoft technologies and to interact with other employees on campus.
-
How long do internships last?
-
We ask that interns stay for 12 weeks, which we feel is long enough to dive into a project and make a significant contribution.
-
Are there locations outside of Redmond, Washington, where I could do an internship?
-
Redmond and Silicon Valley are the primary locations where we offer internships, but we do offer internships elsewhere, such as in North Carolina, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Texas, and Illinois.
{I note that "Explore Microsoft" is the one internship that is really geared to people who have not chosen a major; you havce to have completed a semester of calculus and an introduction to computer science course to qualify--maybe it would be o.k. to have these scheduled for next semester;
this is for people who've just completed their freshman or sophomore years only!}
-
For Science majors: search for internships with the U.S. Geological Survey or NOAA
at jobsearch.usajobs.gov/a9IN08i.asp
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's programs
The NOAA has several undergraduate student internships advertised--one in the Chesapeake Bay area in ecological management of the Bay area (Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C. coastal bay area); one in Miami monitoring fish populations; several others in Miami; an opportunity in Alaska; an excellent one that includes an academic scholarship plus summer internship--you can use the scholarship anywhere you want; and finally, opportunities for minority students or students with disabilities to intern with different companies or government agencies.
The deadlines vary but already they are taking applications.

Research Experience for Undergraduates--Bermuda semester
