Our Mary Locke descended from Cyrus Locke, who was adopted by his step father James Locke

Cyrus thus changed his name from Angell (his real Dad's name) to Locke. His mother's last name was "Smith" -- her young brothers, last name Smith, also lived with her and her second husband. Other documents also say she was Hannah Smith. Thus the lines below are not relevant to our Mary Locke -- but I had collected them prior to learning who our Mary Locke was, so have left them here for anyone searching.

Below is a complete list of the Ancestors of a Mary E. Locke, descendant of Charles E. Locke (whose partial tree appears above)

(Note that "&" symbolizes a marriage; ">" symbolizes a descent.)

Note that Tyler and Salter, two names in this tree, appear on the list of the accused of Salem at The University of Virginia's electronic text exhibit on Salem(http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/salem/witchcraft/texts/salemaccused.html). However, Henry Salter was not a direct ancestor of Mary E. Locke. I have yet to research Hannah and Martha Tyler!

Another Mary Locke was born nearby this Mary E. Locke (listed above) a bit later, in 1876, to another Charles Locke, Charles G. Locke. I suspect a relation between the two Marys because of proximity and because of the similar names across two generations, but have not made a link.
The fathers of the Mary Locke girls listed here, Charles E. Locke and Charles G. Locke may have been cousins -- that's one line to investigate because the birth places and names of both girls are similar, and because both Charles have similar birth dates as well. Thus Charles G. Locke may be the son of a brother of Samuel Locke! That's what I need to check out!

Our Mary L. Locke was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, to combmaker Cyrus L. Locke. Her birth year is not the same as that of the Mary L. F--- listed in the Worcester County, Massachusetts census for 1930, but this Mary L. F--- is indeed our Mary L. Locke F--- (her birth date got later every census). On the 1930 census she was living nearby the F---s and caring for her family (my mother recalls her grandmother raising her grandchild and supporting it, and also supporting its mother who was her daughter [Madeline/Nancy M.?], and supporting her crippled husband -- by working as a maid -- not sure how much of that is true). According to my grandmother (who was Mary Locke F---s daughter-in-law), Mary L. F--- was actually born in Salem, Massachusetts, but the census has her as born in Leominster although her father, Cyrus, enlisted in the Union Army from Salem. Cyrus's census records say he was originally born in Rhode Island. He filed a name change from Angell to Locke in Leominster County. There is a James Locke in Rhode Island in 1830-40 (he appears with a woman our Hannah M. Smith's age, and also a child Cyrus Locke's age, on the 1840 census). This is Cyrus's adoptive father. Cyrus's middle name was "Smith", which must have been his mother's maiden name. It's not completely clear whether his mother was our Hannah M. Smith Locke with whom he lived with, that Hannah had married an unknown Angell prior to her marriage to James Locke, or whether a sister had married an Angell -- perhaps Mary Smith Angell, possibly our Hannah M.'s sister, who apparently married a Cyrus Angell and was widowed circa 1841 according to find-a-grave; or was she widowed? The headstone for her supposed husband Cyrus Angell at find-a-grave says he died in 1811 not 1841 and mentions no wife Mary. (Is our own Cyrus's first name then for a father or for an uncle?). The information about Cyrus Angell and Mary Smith Angell comes from Find-a-Grave, (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GScid=2221949&GRid=20103643&), Angell Lot, Lincoln, Providence County, Rhode Island; and from Family Search, (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVVG-FXVH) (but I believe the famlysearch information is based on the find-a-grave information). There's an image of both Cyrus Angell's and Mary Smith Angell's graves, but as I noted the death date on the headstone does not match the transcribed information; one Cyrus Angell however is censused in North Providence, Rhode Island, in 1840, with a wife and child apparently -- the same year James and Hannah Locke are censused together with a child of Cyrus's age. So which child is our Cyrus Smith [Angell] Locke? There was apparently a Cyrus Angell who lived a bit longer than did the one with the 1811 headstone, but he would probably not have been our Cyrus's father.
Hannah M. Smith Locke was the daughter of Hannah M. Wilkinson who married John Smith; Hannah and John also had a child named "Sperry" and one named "John", in addition to daughter Hannah M. (see: https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AHannah~%20%2Bsurname%3AWilkinson~%20%2Bbirth_place%3A%22Rhode%20Island%22~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1760-1785~). The couple may have had other children (the Mary Smith Angell I have mentioned above?; I'm also looking at a Sarah Smith Angell whose death date was 1836 and who, based on her birth dates, may have been our Cyrus's mother; however her parents are not the same as Hannah's apparently, but are the same as Abigail Smith Angell, mentioned below; these seem to have been relatives of Hannah Smith Locke's).
"Sterry Smith" listed as Hannah Wilkinson Smith's child at find-a-grave (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=24640924), is a "calculated relationship". Hannah Wilkinson Smith's husband's and parents' names are apparently listed on the headstone (it's possible to see "John Smith" from the photograph online at find-a-grave).
Ethan Angell is a member of the Angell family who is buried on this same lot, along with several children who died as infants and his first wife. Ethan was the son of Nehemiah Angell and Anna Hill. His first wife was Anna Eddy who died in 1841; his second was Abigail H. "Nabby" Smith, whom he married 14 Jul 1844. There is no record of a child named Cyrus however but it's quite possible that Cyrus was also a descendant of Nehemiah Angell and Anna Hill, as Hannah M. Smith Locke's mother, Hannah Wilkinson Smith, is buried on the same lot as Ethan Angell. Abigail Smith however was apparently not the child of John Smith and Hannah M. Wilkinson but of another Smith (probably related as one of her aunts -- known as Mercy or Mary and in one case as Sarah -- apparently married into the Peckham clan; Hannah Wilkinson Smith herself was a descendant of the Peckhams), also named John. Abigail H. Smith Angell is buried at the Captain John Smith lot.
(Note: At least one of these Angells served in the Revolutionary war with General Nathaniel Greene.)
Several Smiths and Angells were intermarried -- so while it's likely that Hannah Wilkinson Smith and husband John Smith were Cyrus S. [Angell] Locke's grandparents, it's not clear who Cyrus S. [Angell] Locke's parents were, but the father's last name must have been Angell, as that was his legal name until he changed it to Locke.
It's not completely clear where James Locke was born but perhaps outside of Rhode Island.
The following information on our Mary L. F--- comes as noted above, from the 1930 census:
Mary L. F---, who gives her age as 53, and daughter, 25, are listed on the Leominster township, Worcester County, 1930 census. Mary L. F--- is listed also as age 53 on the earlier 1920 census for the Fitchburg township in Worcester County. She is living with husband James F--- 54, and children Madeline (probably the daughter later listed with her), 15, H--, 19, a public school teacher, and R--, 20, a cost accountant.
As noted above, Mary's father Cyrus Locke is listed as born in Rhode Island, and her mother as born in Nova Scotia (as a child, Mary spent part of her life in Nova Scotia apparently; she is listed on the passenger list for one boat returning from Nova Scotia and the family is not listed in the U.S. on several censuses).
Our Cyrus Locke, born in Rhode Island, age 42, is listed on the 1880 census for Leominster township, Worcester County, with a daughter Mary L. Locke, age 13. His wife Elizabeth, 41, was born in Nova Scotia. There are several other children. The older children and Cyrus work in a comb factory.
Only one Cyrus Locke near to the proper age could be found on the 1850 census. This Cyrus was living in New Hampshire. He was born in 1844 according to his parents, Benjamin M. Locke, 30, and Francis Locke 28. This is not our Cyrus although our Cyrus had a son named Benjamin -- our Cyrus did not change his name till after this date. This other Cyrus Locke would have been fourteen or so at the birth of our Cyrus's eldest child Hannah M. -- according to the 1880 census ages for the Locke children (unless ages have been doctored to allow the children to work). Other children of our Cyrus include Joseph E., the eldest, and James!
Benjamin M. lived next door to another Locke family, Stephen 49 and Sarah 49, who were living with two other Lockes, Reachel, age 64, and Bradbury, in his 80's.
There is, finally, a James Locke, age 30-40, in Providence, Rhode Island, listed on the 1840 census, with one small child living with him (under age 5; relationships are not given on the 1840 census) and a wife, age 20-30 (who is our Hannah M. Smith Locke). This James Locke is our Cyrus Locke's stepdad.
There were actually two primary early Lockes (assuming James's ancestors entered the country early, but James himself may have been born perhaps in Pennsylvania, Delaware, or still another state). These two early Lockes are Deacon William Locke, and Captain John Locke. Our own Cyrus Locke, later in life, is listed as "Reverend C. S. Locke".
